With Christmas less than a week away (where did the year go?) I thought it was appropriate to put together the cbu design student's wish list.

I just sent out a text message to a few other design students asking what was on their list.

in no particular order:

1. Nikon D700 (Eric). Personally I am a canon user, but other students in our program are quite the Nikon enthusiasts. This photo was taken by Eric Mcfarland with his current camera, he wants an upgrade this Christmas.

2. Terabyte mobile hard drive (Andrew). I'm pretty sure one of my biggest fears is that my computer would crash and all of my work would be lost forever. I get chills just thinking about it. An external hard drive is a was to insure this never happens. And i guess Andrew is thinking "go big or go home" by asking for a whole terabyte of memory.

3. Graphics tablet (Liz). She is also asking for a new lense for her camera. By having multiple skills to draw upon (photographer, artist, etc) I think you can better market yourself. Both of Liz's requests are

4. Starbucks gift cards (Karen). Hey, we are college students. We run on java. And starbucks always has such cute design stuff.

5. The New MacBook Pro. A girl can dream, right?

6. This sweet umbrella from veer. Fellow design student Cassie has one of these. And it has been uncharasterically rainiy this past week. So this is one way to stay dry in style.
7. Adobe CS4. When we get back from Christmas break all the computers in the lab will have CS4 on them, and i want my laptop to be able to keep up.

Soup Can

Liz here. I have to second what Rachel said. This semester has floooooown by!

My last graphic design project was my hardest one by far! Soup Can. Creativity block. Soup Can. Do I make up my own brand? Soup Can. Uhoh, the soup pictures don't look very appetizing!

Well, here is my final project. (I even shot it myself! A whole photoshoot set up for a bowl of soup. Yeah, I feel special.)

I can not believe that the first semester is basically done, the time really did fly.
This semester i learned a lot about my creative process and pushing the boundaries.
We were really pushed to think out of the box with the projects that were assigned to us. I enjoyed just hanging out in the graphic design room to see what other students were working on.
Some of their work was really inspiring.

Well these are two of my projects from the semester.

We had to design a magazine cover and feature story layout.

And then this is my composite image. It is made up of 10 images all stitched together. Honestly, i am not completely satisfied with how it turned out I think I am going to continue working on it.

Thomas one the very talented designers at cbudesign brought this metal work to the white elephant gift exchange at the innaugural cbudesign Christmas Dinner. Rooly eyewear donated a bunch of items which were a hit. Professor Morgan Williams who will be teaching in the spring was in attendance with his wife. Thomas and Steve scored the yoddling pickle gift by having it land on them with the third steal (11th district, southwest white elephant rules).

Hello! This is Liz, another student blogger! Here I am, junior at CBU, double majoring in graphic design and christian studies, the two best majors!

Pretty much, being a graphic design major is the most fun thing ever. Today is the day of our Christmas festivities! We're gonna have a bomb party with amazing food and an exciting white elephant gift exchange. Everyone is gonna want my gift...haha, now I bet all you non graphic design majors wanna change your major. Mhmm, that's right.

Designers as connectors.

I am reading this book called "How to think like a great graphic designer" which is the worst title for the book because of the cheese factor. The book however is filled with little pearls of wisdom and is a cool read because these little thoughts stick with me and I find myself thinking "oh, oh, I have to relay this to the class tomorrow". Most recently is the thought that designers are connectors and not creators and as of late I would agree with summation. We do quite a bit of connecting dots a.k.a. ideas. We show the clients what in most cases they are already doing and doing very well. I am not sure how many failing businesses run out and hire designers to rescue failing business but good ones understand the need or don't understand the need but just want to look cooler. In any case they not understand why they are successful and it our task to discern their qualities and form solutions that will show the market these qualities. We connect the dots between client's needs and seller's needs.

I have typed, deleted, typed, and deleted this first sentence several times now. Basically I am not quite sure how to start off.

I guess the appropriate thing to do would be to tell you who I am.
When I meet a group of people for the first time and we have to go around the room and introduce ourselves I usually say, "I'm Rachel, Junior, Graphic Design major, CBU."
But that statement is a lie.
I am double majoring in Graphic Design and Visual Arts. I just leave out the art major because graphic design just sounds super edgy and cool and I want people to focus on that part instead of becoming distracted by the art.

I really do love art though, and I don't feel bad leaving it out, because graphic design is such a perfect blend of art and technology. I am a geek, but in a good way.

When I grow up I want to be an art teacher, maybe. I mean I am pretty open to other avenues as long as I get to express myself and glorify the Creator.

I will be one of the student bloggers here, offering you a glimpse into our stellar program.

One of the aspects of working as a professional is working with smaller budgets. This page is built to keep students and future students updated on events, show student work, promote informative article about design and essays about design. This is not a forum for you to vent your personal frustrations about cbu because your posts won't see the light day on this blog. This blog is for friends of the program only.

This program takes seriously the priviledge of preparing Christian design students with the skills they need to make an impact in the Kingdom of God. It is our intention not to embarrass cbu but build it up and to build a premier Christian design program. The program is in an infancy stage and there is much work to do but we have vision and pray God will be with us.
